Nitric Oxide (NO) is a marker of inflammation in the airways of the lungs. The higher the level of inflammation in the airways, the higher will be the NO level in the exhaled air.
Hence measuring the NO level in expired air gives us a additional tool in determining if a person's airways or lung disorder (such as asthma, or bronchitis) is optimally treated and whether the condition can be better controlled.
This newly developed test can thus compliment the basic lung function tests that we already have.
